Hundreds of teachers targeted by scammers prompting caution from PNG Teachers Service Commission1/27/2024
In a concerning trend, well-educated Papua New Guinean teachers are increasingly becoming victims of cash bribery scams, with scammers exploiting their desperation for expedited salary payments.
The chairman of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Samson Wangihomie, delivered a stern warning to teachers during a dedication service in Port Moresby on Monday. He cautioned against succumbing to the allure of paying cash to accelerate the processing of outstanding salaries. Wangihomie revealed that scammers are actively targeting unsuspecting teachers through platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp groups.
Highlighting the severity of the issue, Wangihomie disclosed that some teachers themselves have been implicated in these scams. He confirmed the suspension of a teacher in 2023 who defrauded a colleague.
Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra echoed the warning, emphasizing that the Department of Education and Ministry of Education provide their services free of charge. He urged teachers not to fall prey to individuals or groups demanding fees for services that should be offered without cost. During his address, Dr. Kombra stressed the importance of reporting any encounters with scammers. However, he acknowledged that many teachers are reluctant to disclose the identities of scammers due to pre-existing agreements between the parties involved. The growing incidence of cash bribery scams targeting educated professionals raises concerns about the vulnerability of individuals within the education sector and underscores the need for heightened vigilance and awareness. Authorities are urging teachers to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and refrain from engaging in transactions that compromise their financial security.
