EDUCATION secretary Dr Uke Kombra has assured parents and students that tertiary institutions and the Education Department will consider the impact of school suspensions during their selection. Kombra said final results of the students would be determined by their performance after the national examinations. He said the department would look at the results of the students and make a decision, however higher education institutions would take into consideration the impact school suspensions had on students’ performance, especially the 12th grade. “There might be a drop in the overall achievement level of students because of the current situation,” Kombra said.
“Not only one student would be affected but all students would be affected in the same way.” Kombra said the Department of Education had considered this and the GPA assessment system could be adjusted given the situation. Concerns have been raised by parents and students that the suspension of schools had a serious impact on the students as they were way behind classes and even with extra hours and remedial classes, they would not be able to catch up with missed lessons before exams. Schools have been advised to adjust their timetables and programmes to cover lessons that were missed but the pressure is on the students to perform satisfactorily to meet the requirements of higher education institutions.
