![]() THE University of Goroka in PNG is looking into implementing geology into secondary school curriculums. Lecturer Savitha De Britto said the Education Department should include earth science education in all public and private secondary schools at the Geoscience, Exploration and Extraction conference. “With this Stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curriculum coming on board in schools of excellence, I think it is the right opportunity to have earth science education integrated into the Stem curriculum at an upper secondary level so that the graduates from there can do more, as Papua New Guinea is a mineral rich country and we need more geoscientist,” she said. She highlighted this during the conference that less than 15 per cent of students who participated in their research showed very high interest in studying geology and earth sciences. “There is interest but we need to somehow link that gap because we have geologists, we have earth scientists who have specialised in different fields and we are the ones who put the foundation for them to be interested and engage in those high esteemed geologist sciences.”
The relevance of earth science education in the country is highly relevant to SBC and Stem curriculum teaching in lower and upper secondary school systems. “The discussion disseminated from the research shows that UOG administration should advocate for the earth science programme at the science foundation year along with all the other sciences, giving the same importance as other science,” she said. Britto said the earth science specialised teachers that UOG will produce should be able to provide that foundation from kindergarten all the way to Grade 12.
