![]() STUDENTS studying science at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) will now benefit from 50 new science books donated by oil and gas producing firm Santos. The company, which merged with Oil Search last year, presented petroleum geoscience books to the UPNG school of natural and physical sciences’ earth sciences division on Thursday. Executive vice-president and co-head of PNG operations Leon Buskens said this was to enhance science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills in the region. Buskens said Santos valued its role in building Stem careers in the oil and gas industry. “We are very proud of all our employees, including our geoscience graduates who studied at this great institution,” he said.
“We are glad to be able to donate these books because we are committed to creating positive and long-term impacts in the communities where we live and work.” Earth sciences head Dr Joseph Espi thanked the company and said the books would assist in the review and updating of existing and planned courses. “We now have critical information to revise our existing petroleum geoscience courses and introduce new ones,” he said. Espi said it was pleasing to see that the long-standing relationship between the university and formerly Oil Search, would continue to bring benefits for years to come.
