ELEMENTARY school teachers in the country will have to undergo diploma or appropriate training if they want to continue teaching grade 1 and 2 classes in primary schools, says Education Minister Jimmy Uguro. Uguro told The National that the elementary programme would be phased out completely. Some elementary school teachers have raised concerns saying that the phrasing out to the elementary programme would affect teachers’ employment, but Uguro said teachers will remain. “They will now be part of primary schools,” he said.
“All they need to do is to upgrade marks to qualify their elevation. “But elementary programme will gradually be phased out.” The Education Department has launched the Early Childhood Education (ECE) policy. Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra said this was the first time that ECE was recognised by the Government. Dr Kombra said preschools would have either an ECE kindergarten 1 and 2, and a preschool or as currently practiced an elementary schools that had grades 1 and 2 in primary schools. He said prep would remain as part of the preschool. “The model we are looking at now is either a preschool with kindergarten 1 and 2, and prep or just the prep,” he said. “The elementary school in the primary school system is going to be phased out to be replaced by preschools under the ECE policy.” The National/PNGEducationNews Next : Police Condemns Shooting Of Students By Security Guards Comments are closed.
