![]() POLICE in Lae have condemned the shooting of two students allegedly by officers of a security firm in Lae, saying “police work should be left to police”. The two students were admitted at the Angau Memorial Hospital on Sunday with gunshot wounds. Met Supt Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban said it was the second time that officers from the same security firm had been involved in actions which endangered the lives of the public. “Security firms with guns have to (use) them according to the licence and what their jurisdiction allows,” he said. “Because once they have acted over their jurisdiction, a lot of issues arise.” Police confiscated a shotgun, a pistol with six live rounds of ammunition from the security firm after the shooting. Police were called at around 3pm to Telikom College in Lae after an employee reported a robbery at his house by thugs. The employee pursued the suspects to the nearby settlement and identified one. He reported the matter to the security firm instead of police. Officers used guns to attack the two grade 12 students. “The weapons were discharged outside their (security firm) working jurisdiction,” he said. “The incident was serious and happened because the security firm wanted to perform police work, which is wrong.”
Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban plans to get the two guns de-registered by the police commissioner. “We cannot let security firms handle dangerous weapons like this and discharging it in public places,” he said. “The matter is serious.” TheNational/PNGEducationnews Next : Row Over University Of Goroka Post Comments are closed.
