THE flexible, open and distance learning (Fode) programme is in discussion with the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) to consider its students for selection into tertiary institutions as school leavers. According to Fode principal Anthony Rayappan, this would allow Fode students apply to online like Grade 12 students in the country. He said the aim was for Fode students to be given the same opportunity as grade 12 students from the secondary and national high schools and for colleges and universities to treated them like students from the system. Rayappan said Fode was working with DHERST to match the requirements and their criteria so that by next year Fode students could also apply online to go into the tertiary institutions to further their education.
Meanwhile, Rayappan said they were expecting an increase in enrolments next year if the government maintained its policy on free education. “We have seen many parents enquiring late. They wanted to join but the enrolment was already closed. So by looking at the enquiry and the students’ interest, there will be high enrolment next year,” he said.
