![]() Reports from the three-day national conference on alcohol and drug abuse by Jesher Tilto, Joy Olali and Antoinette Poivi PASTORS and counsellors must be appointed in PNG Government schools to help reduce alcohol and drug abuses, Higher Education Research Science and Technology Department secretary Prof Fr Jan Czuba says. “The anti-socio-economic issue cannot be reduced or resolved unless there is a holistic approach to guide students to reject the abuses,” he added. Fr Czuba said any holistic approach to check the growth of abuses must involve pastors and counsellors in schools.
“Pastors should be treated equally as teachers. “Teachers nourish the mind of students, pastors can nourish the spirit of students,”he said. “We are negotiating with the Personal Management Department to create positions for pastors and counsellors in Government schools with the higher education sector going through a reform.” Fr Czuba also stressed the difficulty in the education system to get pastors and counsellors to teach in schools. “We say it is too expensive to employ pastors and counsellors in schools. “But is it more expensive to employ counsellors and pastors in schools or to loose young citizens to alcohol and drug abuses?” he asked.
