![]() A YOUNG man from Bakum village in the Konoagil area of Namatanai, New Ireland, wants to bring change and development to his ward, local level government (LLG) and district though education. Charles Towinman, 34, is a grade 10 school leaver, however, this has not stopped him looking for ways to educate himself. After completing his grade 10 at Namatanai Secondary School in 2005, he went home and decided to continue with his education by upgrading his grade 10 marks through matriculation. His childhood dream was to become a primary school teacher. That was why he did matriculation so he could apply for teachers training college. Instead of going to teachers college, he attended early childhood education (ECE) training programme in East New Britain in 2018 and recently completed his second year. THE Papua New Guinea University of Natural Resources and Environment has suspended classes at its Vudal campus in East New Britain for 14 days following the detection of a second Covid-19 positive case on campus.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Francis Essacu said the individual was now in isolation at the Provincial Health Authority Covid -19 care facility. The suspension of classes began last Thursday. It will end March 31. Classes which can be conducted online are continuing. All university staff are at work and have been encouraged to strictly adhere to the Covid-19 protocols. ![]() Fourteen graduate students who pioneered Divine Word University’s Bachelor Degree of Medicine graduated yesterday at DWU’s 39th graduation ceremony. They were the first to take up this course in 2016. They were among 781 students from various fields of study from the four faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Informatics, Education and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. ![]() STUDENTS attending higher education institutions will continue classes despite the surge in Covid-19 cases around the country, according to the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology. Department secretary Fr Jan Czuba said after discussions with National Pandemic Response Controller David Manning, it was agreed that higher education institutions should continue their academic programmes. ![]() Western Pacific University has registered 51 students for the inaugural academic year. Amongst the 51 pioneer students are 14 young women. Registration took place between the 22nd and the 28th of February and the inaugural academic year started on Tuesday the 2nd of March, 2021. Out of respect for the Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, the celebrations that had been planned to mark the Western Pacific University’s inaugural academic year launching were cancelled. All pioneer students will undertake the Foundation Year program. This program is a compulsory course of study for students seeking entry to a Bachelor’s program. ![]() Fourteen new doctors will graduate from Divine Word University’s main campus in Madang , Friday March 19. These 14 graduates are the pioneer of 30 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) class that enrolled in 2016. The graduate doctors from DWU after graduation will return to various hospitals for the compulsory two-year residency program. The MBBS program is offered by the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The Department of Education has suspended classes for four (4) weeks due COVID-19.
The suspension of classes is from 22 March 2021 to April 19th 2021. National Pandemic Response Controller David Manning said the total Covid-19 cases as of noon Tuesday was 2,479, including 31 deaths. There were 128 new cases reported in a 24-hour period from around the country indicating an intense community transmission even in rural areas which was a concern for the National Control Centre. Term one was supposed to end on April 9 followed by a one-week holiday from April 12 to 16. But the term one school break will now be from March 22 to April 16.
