POLICE in Kokopo, East New Britain, have charged a 15-year-old male primary school student in Kokopo with sexual penetration. The suspect is currently detained at the Kokopo Police Station cell and is expected to appear before the Kokopo District Court this week. According to the provincial police commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali, the incident occurred on Friday at Palnakaur village in the Kokopo-Vunamami urban local level government, Kokopo. The suspect, who attends Kabaleo Primary School, is of mixed East New Britain and Manus parentage. PEOPLE joining the teaching profession have been warned to do so through the proper processes, following the referral of another 142 to authorities in a scam rocking the Education Department. The department has already deregistered 620 teachers, mainly in elementary schools, who entered teachers’ colleges through fraudulent means and graduated. Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra has been given a list of another 142 from one province alone to be checked.” “This is being checked now, and when confirmed, those teachers will also be de-registered,” he said. “There are teachers who have gone through teachers colleges but have not used correct or true certificates. Department of Education is embarking on introducing the Small to Medium Enterprise or SME concept at schools. This will be done through a curriculum for a formal conventional school system. Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra revealed this during the launching of the Coffee Curriculum Teachers Resources Books in Port Moresby on Monday. TWENTY-three-year-old Gerard Ivalaoa hopes to help empower and support students achieve their goals through his books. Ivalaoa is the eldest in his family of three children and is of mixed Morobe, Gulf and Central parentage and resides at the ATS settlement in Port Moresby. He recently published a book titled “70 reminders of Academic Excellence” and wrote it using his Wowi phone typing some 85,000 words. Ivalaoa said growing up at a settlement near ATS (Air Transport Wing, the PNG Defence Force’s air base) he attended New Erima Primary School and in 2014 completed his eighth grade and went on to De La Salle Secondary School over the next two years for grade 9 and 10. He was then selected to study at Port Moresby National High School and completed senior high school in 2018. AN Australian Awards maritime scholarship winner Michelle Marnapal is encouraging women in PNG to pursue a career marine engineering. It’s challenging and rewarding, she added. Marnapal is among 26 PNG women who were awarded maritime scholarships through Australian Awards since 2018 through an innovative partnership with the private sector. “If you’re interested in marine engineering and have the opportunity to study it, take it,” she said. “Don’t let your gender dictate your dream.” Scholarships for women at the PNG Maritime College and Sea-time and other practical training are supported by private-sector partners such as Pacific Towing, Steamships, Consort Shipping and China Navigation. HEALTH and Education sectors in Papua New Guinea remain core pillars to the nation's development and Marape/Basil Government continues to support these sectors; according to Higher Education, Research, Science & Technology and Sports Minister, Wesley Raminai. "Successive governments have prioritized these two key sectors and my government (Marape/Basil government) continues to see the importance and will continue to support in the upcoming national budget appropriations," Minister Raminai said. A secondary school in Port Moresby said this when clarifying the student enrollment processes. The verification of school certificates amongst grades 9 and 11 students at Badihagwa Secondary took place two weeks ago and will continue this week. School principal Maru Bala said it’s an annual exercise carried out by schools as a check and balance, and the school is doing this especially amongst year 11 students who were supposed to be selected via the national online selection system. GRADE 10 students throughout Papua New Guinea will sit for the Written Expression Examination on Thursday 3th of June, 2021. Education Minister Jimmy Uguro urged students to perform to the best of their ability, and put into practice what they had learnt as such examination would determine their future. He said there used to be instances of students cheating and helped by teachers during national exams. “Progress in life comes through hard work, dedication and commitment. “Knowledge is not cheap. “Promotions are not cheap. PNG education advocacy network (Pean) is taking lead in the national employment policy review to capture youths, women and disability issues, executive director David Kumie says.
“There should be an inclusive policy to capture everyone’s interest,” he said. “One of the key issues discussed was minimum wage and youth employment and gender inclusive development. “When mentioning gender inclusiveness, everyone thinks it is about women and girls. “Most of the time, people with special needs are not included. “We refer to it as persons with disability, but the right terminology should be person with special needs and not a ‘disabled person’. A NEW certificate course has been introduced at the PNG National Research Institute (PNGNRI) which aims to have students enrich their knowledge and understanding in research design, data collection and data analytical methods in the social sciences.
The certificate in social science research methods (SSRM) course began classes on Friday. According to a statement from the NRI, more than 20 participants, including policy analysts, consultants, researchers and other officials from the Government and private sector registered for the week-long course. The course programme consists of: Planning for social science research; qualitative and quantitative research methods in theory and in practice; and, report writing. |
