CATHOLIC bishops in PNG are concerned with welfare issues of missionary teachers not being prioritised by the Education Department. Cardinal Sir John Ribat said issues included salaries and leave fares. The bishops asked for a meeting between Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (Dherst) Minister Wesley Raminai and secretary Dr Francis Hualopmomi. The bishops wanted to air some of their concerns and discuss ways to partner in the delivery of education services. “My minister, I must tell you that some of these long time committed and dedicated missionary teachers have left the country because their affairs have not been administered properly by the Education Department,” the cardinal said.
Raminai assured the bishops that he would talk with the Education minister to address the issue. Meanwhile, Dr Hualopmomi clarified to the bishops that DHERST was processing and administering the transfer of public teachers in education colleges and institutions and also church-run institutions. The transfers were effected on April 30. The CBC called for more open dialogue and partnership in the delivery of teacher education and health care in the country. “I want to assure you that one of my primary objectives was to build good working relationships with all stakeholders and work closely with the Catholic church to implement the major reforms in the higher education sector,” Raminai said.
