NINETEEN newly-trained medical doctors from the Divine Word University (DWU) will join the workforce following the passage of Medical Registration Amendment Bill yesterday. When presenting the Bill (2021), Minister for Health and HIV/AIDS Jelta Wong said the Medical Registration Act 1980 was the law that regulated and registered all the different cadres of health professionals in PNG. Wong said the law set out the requirement of health professional registration and the standard under which they were to practise. “This law on the other hand gives confidence and reassurance to the public of the health professional’s expertise in delivery of safety and quality health service,” he said. Central police commander Insp Patterson Birigi told The National yesterday that Benedith Aisa Angapue, 50, senior teacher who taught at Inauai Primary School, was travelling with her family to Port Moresby on Saturday when drunk youths allegedly tried to hold up their vehicle. “The deceased and her family were traveling into Port Moresby in an open-back utility between 6pm and 8pm on Saturday,” he said. Angapue was from Inaua village in Kairiku. PNG EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro says teachers are not allowed to charge fees for remedial classes on weekends. Uguro said the Government was responsible for teachers’ salaries and those who did extra work and charged for fees should be reported to responsible authorities. “This is double-dipping,” he said. A SECONDARY school in Port Moresby is owed more than a million kina in fees from both the Government and parents, its principal says. Gordon Secondary School principal George Kenega said funding from Government tuition fee subsidy had not been to the expected amount and this had impacted his school’s ability to align its budget and implement projects and initiatives. He said his school was yet to receive K513,789 from parents and K740,544.03 from the Government subsidy. THE United Kingdom (UK) government’s Chevening scholarship builds an international community of people who are committed to working together to drive positive change, an official says. Head of UK government scholarships Naomi Rayner said this after the British High Commission in Port Moresby stated that application were now open. Chevening scholarships are fully funded by the UK government and support study – usually a one-year master’s degree at UK universities. The window for online applications (www.chevening.org/apply) to study in the UK in 2022-23 opened on Aug 3 and will close on Nov 2.
