![]() History has it that seafarers have always been male and ships are given a feminine identity because they are the male sailors’ companion out at sea for months. Seafaring has remained one of the most male dominated professions in the world. Set to make a difference, three young Papua New Guinean girls, fresh out of school, dared to take on the role, with PNG Ports Corporation Limited (PNG Ports) as their staunch supporter. A few PNG sisters have already embarked on a similar journey and are sailing the seas somewhere where this trio are determined to follow. Recently recruited under the PNG Ports maritime cadetship program, Jemma Paeke, Janice Semoso and Rayleen Inawasa are among a group of nine cadets selected under the program. Janice Semoso, from the Autonomous Regions of Bougainville, is one of the three female cadets. She said being a sea farer was never her dream, in fact, she had always wanted to be an airplane pilot, chasing sunsets. Janice has a love for physics and how machines work. She graduated from the University of Papua New Guinea in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science (Major in Physics). She applied to undergo training as an airplane pilot and was selected to attend the Coffs Harbour Flying School in New South Wales, but could not attend as the fees were too high. Janice is comfortable working with males because her chosen field of study had always been alongside boys. “I am excited to be part of this program and realize that this field is really interesting. It is something I never dreamt of doing, but why not?” says Janice. And this is just what the maritime cadetship program is all about. It is about daring young Papua New Guineans to dream, try new things and change cultural perceptions. “You have made the right decision. You are now going into a male dominated field. You have my support and I can assure you that you also have the management's support,” said the Managing Director of PNGPCL, Mr. Fego Kiniafa. PNG Ports prides itself as the only capable pilotage services provider in the region with nil incidences since it started providing pilotage services 60 years ago. PNG Ports is looking at expanding its pilotage services and significant investments have been made including the purchase of five new customized pilot boats worth AUD$2 million each, training of experienced marine pilots and engineers in Australia, and the recent recruitment of the cadets . PNG Ports is an equal opportunity provider and all decisions are merit based. A career in the maritime sector is very demanding, rewarding and exciting. But working with PNG Ports, the best state entity, is one opportunity not to miss. As Janice puts it: “And, why not?” Dare to take the opportunity, change dreams; not chase them.
