The Papua New Guinea Prime Minister’s response to the “no jab, no job” policy has been branded a “weak statement” by the student representative senate from the PNG University of Technology (UNITECH). Student representatives in Lae expressed their dissatisfaction at the Prime Minister’s response in Parliament yesterday when he was asked about the implementation of mandatory vaccination by certain companies. During Parliament’s September 7th session, West New Britain Regional MP, Sasindran Muthuvel, asked Prime Minister James Marape to clarify the government’s stance on the “No jab, no job” policy. SOME women who did not go to school turn to abortion because they think it is the fastest way to end pregnancy, a student says. Grade nine student Francisca Gau of the La Salle Technical College in Port Moresby made the comment during a chat room show last week. She said those women failed to realise that their womb, meant to conceive life, “is the most sacred place in the world”. “It is the birthplace of the son of man,” she said. “To commit such an atrocity would be to deny a life blessed with purpose from God.” PNG’s Minster for Sports and Higher Education, Hon. I.STATUTORY BASIS Section 143M of the Higher Education (General Provisions) (Amended) Act 2020 establishes the Governing Councils for all registered Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Papua New Guinea. Prime Minister James Marape has urged the University of Papua New Guinea to help address the issue of the growing number of Grade 12 and 10 school leavers every year, which could become a major issue. He said this when addressing the UPNG Strategy and Management Workshop in Port Moresby on Tuesday, that only 10,000 of the current 30,000 Grade 12 school leavers could continue their education with 20,000 not having the chance. “We have been leaving 20,000 of them (Grade 12 students) in the by ways of Papua New Guinea,” he told UPNG Council members and other stakeholders. Papua New Guinea MINISTER for Education Jimmy Uguro has announced that a total of K25.9 million was remitted to bank accounts for elementary and primary schools as well as inclusive education resource centres last Wednesday. Uguro said out of the K486.3 million allocated for education this year, a total of K268.5 million had been released so far. The Department of Education has announced the Vacancy gazette 2021. The copies of the gazette ( Hard copies) have been sent to the provinces already. The department says some schools and positions are missing in the gazette we ask that you make acting appointments for year 2022. The departments General Education Services Division GESD relies on the Master Position Register every year to prepare the Vacancy gazette and we believe these schools were not captured on the 2021 MPR. This is according to Central Province Governor, Robert Agarobe who announced that a K6 million payment would be made for the 2021 school year for secondary school students in Central Province, NCD and tertiary students throughout the country. He said the delay in this payment this year was beyond his control and is due to the priority given for COVID related payments by the government.
