THIRTY-EIGHT female students from St Peter Channel Catholic College in East New Britain received a major boost in their learning early this month. The students were supported under the Boosting Education Standards Together in PNG (Best PNG) Female Teachers Education Scholarship Scheme and will be studying for a degree in secondary education (mathematics and science). Nine received scholarship support from Newcrest Mining and 29 are supported by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). Deputy secretary for Education Walipe Wingi challenged the students to remain focused in their studies, graduate from the college and be part of the education department’s vision to provide quality education for all. “You were specifically selected in this programme to expand the number of female specialist teachers in mathematics and science in secondary schools,” he said. “It’s a big step for you and I challenge you to be a game changer and a valuable teacher out in the communities where you teach.” GPE senior education specialist Tariq Khan said that GPE was proud to be partnering with the Education Department, Department of Higher Education Science and Technology, Japan International Cooperation Agency and Save the Children to support education reforms and teacher education in PNG.
