![]() Ruby Sabie, 35, who is a Grade 10 leaver and a mum to four children, has graduated with a certificate as excavator operator at Mapex Training Institute on June 14. She left school in 2007 when she got married to her husband. Sabie said her husband would complain about his fortnightly pay not being enough whenever she and the children asked him for money. “He belittles me for the money he spends on me and his children,” she said. “So I took up the excavator operator training to make my own money.” Sabie said people criticised her when she took up the excavator operator course. “My husband’s family and friends would tell me that the course was not for females,” she said. “But that did not stop me. “I continued as I knew that one day, I would be able to earn my own money.”
Another female trainee who received a certificate as qualified excavator operator is Agnes Sokim from North Fly in Western. She said her village is located near the Ok Tedi Mine and she is looking forward to sending her papers to the mine. She encouraged those women who think low of themselves to think positive and act smart. Sokim said when you think positive and act smart, you would be able to do anything despite circumstances surrounding you. She said she took up the course because few females were in that field.
