THE United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has offered scholarships to 10 students to specialise in midwifery, says country representative Marielle Sander. Sander told the scholarship recipients that midwifes were the forefront of the change for women in the country. “I am relying on you to be the change in the country,” she said. “The journey one takes to become a midwife is a journey of empowerment. “And when it comes to reproductive health, midwives knows best and are the champions.” Sander said the country needed more qualified midwives.
University of Goroka midwifery school coordinator Sr Clerah Goveh said the scholarships took the weight off their shoulders. “The country needs more midwives and we have to start somewhere,” she said. “Ten new midwives are a step in the right direction.” Goveh challenged the students to do their best. She said the availability of the scholarship for future midwifery students depended on how well the students performed during the 18 months. “The school expects nothing less than excellent grades,” she said. Goveh thanked the UNFPA for the generous support and investment. University of Gorok vice-chancellor Dr Ten Waninga thanked UNFPA for supporting the midwifery programme.
