By Thomas Hukahu There was an issue in a group about the progress of a certain school in PNG and I made my contribution with these words: As an educator for decades, the only yardstick that I use to tell if a school is running well or not is this: DID THE MAJORITY OF THE STUDENTS SCORE PASS GRADES? Whether they get on to the next level of education is something else. But, did they improve their overall grades in external exams and had a higher average than in previous years? That is the sole yardstick that I use to measure the success of a school. (Whether they got a new truck or K1.5 million or an expat headmaster or principal is immaterial. Academic results is priority no. 1.) How a school improves itself academically is the responsibility of the administration and BOG/Governing Council. If you have the wrong people in the administration and BOG/GC, you can never improve your standards over the years. You will continue to get the same dismal or even worse results. EVERYTHING FALLS BACK ON LEADERSHIP. If you have lousy leadership, the school will not get anywhere. It is the same in football teams too. Poor leadership will never make the team a champion. I know this sounds hard, but it is the truth. Good leaders aspire for improvement and/or excellence. And they are strategists. They know how to get results. If you continue to have the wrong people in leadership, your ship will never get anywhere. They must be changed! Sorry, but that is the truth! ADDED POINT: The good leader is someone who gets a good team around him/her. It will not be a solo effort. But the wish for better results/excellence requires a team effort. However, the person given the baton to lead must pick a good team and that can mean taking off people who have been making decisions for many years and which have seen no improvements. Like I said, if you look at a football team, that is how it should be done. In the end, the coach, and the two captains must all want to win for their team to win. The principal and headmaster of a school, its BOG/GC and admin team must want to win, if the school is going to win. If not, the school exists with no purpose. It has no life. next : 2020 PNG Education Calendar Share your Inspirational Stories, Education Issues, Education Talk.
