Commentary by Gogie W Many commentators are taking the TFF Policy out of context. Many are claiming that the policy made ‘Parents lazy’ while other are saying ‘nothing is free’ , or others say ‘economy scrambled ‘and so on. The previous government was tasked by the United Nation (UN) to educate its citizens. The UN introduced what Education For All (EFA) which is a global movement led by UNESCO (United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), aiming to meet the learning needs of all children, youth and adults. All Governments, development agencies, civil society, non-government organizations and the media were tasked to work toward reaching these goals.
The previous government’s aim through the TFF Policy was to achieve this universal goal in educating its citizens. Remember, prior to the TFF Policy, only the children for the rich were getting educated while the middle class and the rural folks children were not going to school because of high school fees. Not many girls were getting educated, not many boys were also getting educated by then. Those children who were not going to school then became warlords, drug addicts, rapists, rascals blocking off roads and caused nuisances in the society. So what were the benefits of TTF Policy? The Benefits of TFF just to name few: • Many children were going to schools. • More girls were getting educated • Many Rural children were going to school. • Many schools were built • Many teaching jobs were created, including school auxiliary staff jobs. The impact of abolishment of TFF Policy • Only the rich will be getting educated, many rural children won’t go to school given the current economy condition. • Many schools in the rural areas as high school fees push out children from enrolling. • Teachers will lose their job, however, “stap nothing na kisim moni’ mentality will eventually come in as teachers will fill out resumption forms on those closed schools. • Not many Papua New Guineans will be educated and social disorder will increase. • Rural-Urban migration will increase #TOTakeBackPNG: Papua New Guinea needs Educated citizens to take the country and its economy forward. It is the government of the day to make wise decisions. Remember, it is the PEOPLE that kill or grow the Economy. It is not the vice versa!
