By Petrus GAND Being taught by professors and doctors at universities is not a coincidence but it is usually the typical way of the education-curriculum system where students are trained to meet the standard criterion in order to obtain a bachelor, a masters or a PhD degree. And it has remained for centuries in the oldest civilisations of the world. The state is the leading facilitator of human-integral development so it must ensure PNG has the most standardized education system, which will positively impact our nation’s growth. Prior to contemporary societies, the responsible academic educators were eligible by merit. They have undergone the system and passed the standards already. Therefore, they have the capability to analyse any situation in many dimensions. Eventually, most of the academic teachers of higher qualifications are diminishing in numbers due to lack of job relevance, an empowering environment, and conflicts over salaries.
While encountering the onus, the lecturers perceive their obligations as a means to survive in this society. They are averse in meticulously handling the assessable tasks from students. The recent grandaunts with bachelors and some who continue their honours degrees are left with all the burdens of the lecturers. The student-tutors, with less experience and analytical skills, overreact as they portray hostility, arrogance and unreliability in their professional careers. Their actions are overruled by their emotions which fall-out in disseminating sub-standard knowledge. The tutors take sides with the students. Some of them have their past colleagues in class, so they deliberately attempt to fail them. On many occasions, they expect the students to perform in a manner that will capture their expectations. This is an illogical perception as not all students think alike. Under the privileged role that they acquire via whatever means they know for themselves, they rarely abide by the books when dealing with the lives of the students. The world is unfair and not everyone has all the privileges that one may need. Many of the students secure their own tuition fees and strive in the streets to pursue their education, with an intent to live a good life after all. The more the tutors compete with the students, the more deteriorating the academic standard turns out to be. Their reactions not only discourage students for further studies, but it demoralises their morale and undermines their intelligence as well. The state-owned universities throughout the country should not have complications with its academic staff. There are myriad elites in the country and abroad. With that, PNG should have masters and PhD holders at universities as tutors and lecturers respectively. And finally, should the lectures take care of their own mass and leave the tutors alone?
