The pain of crying every night to achieve his dreams was so heart breaking for a young boy who was raised in a single parent family in his entire life. It was his mother alone taking both responsibilities of a father and mother at the same time. Henry was 5 years old when his dad passed on after he was Diagnosed with the Chronic Respiratory Disease at Nonga General Hospital in Rabaul, East New Britain Province of Papua New Guinea. "My school fees were paid through copra sales and my mother would usually sits at the market 24/7 selling garden produce for my busfare and school fee" I don't have things like other kids have, I wished to take lunch money to school but I don't because my mum can't give me. She only prepares lunch or some time I would go to school without food until classes end at 3:30pm. This is the story of Andy Henry. Andy hails from mix parentage of East New Britain and Manus Province. "I was in Primary school. My friends told me I am dumb and slow learner, I can't make it to High school and no body wants to sit next to me because my uniform stinks." Always remember that, criticism is part of our life. Take it as steppingstone and aim high. "Every night before going to bed I prayed and ask Lord for help. Eventhough life was really hard for me, I still wanted to achieve my dream of becoming a health worker so that I can save people's life." "Before my Grade 8 Examination eveyone said I will no do it properly, however, my mum never gives up on me, she kept encouraging me to believe in myself that I can do it." After examination, the 26 year old was selected to do Grade at Malaguna Technical High School. "I was a drop out, because I failed my Grade 10 examination. My relatives makes fun of me. I thought to myself. That's the end of my journey in education. I will never achieve my dream of becoming a health worker. While his friends were doing year 11, Henry was in the village with pass on maths and Science. "I beg the principal if I can be given a second chance but only to be rejected because of my low marks even I looked for jobs in supper market stores but was rejected." Even when life rejects you, still believe in yourself that you still worth something good. I begged my sister with tears rolling slowly down my eyes, asking her if she could help me find a school. I went along with her to Port Moresby in search of Education, unfortunately I wasn't able to find a space. "Praying and Begging God I want to become somebody, but why is life so difficult and painful for me." That very year, Henry was employed by City pharmacy limited at North Waigani, as shop assistance "My job is to clean the floor, shelves and packing customers groceries... My fortnight pay was K204.00, every fortnight. While working as a shop assistance, Henry enrolled himself at FODE center at Waigani upgrading his maths and science subjects. "I used K100.00 to pay my subjects and K100.00 for my bus fare and for a packet of snax biscuits to hold my stomach.. I worked day shift clock out at 3:30pm and do my CODE subjects from 4pm till mid night... After his FODE Exams in 2014, Henry got 3 acceptances from three institutions. "I choose Nursing College as it was my dream of becoming a health worker." In 2017, Henry graduated with Diploma in Nursing, being the top student getting a Clinical awards , best performance awards, and Academic awards. 2018 he was employed by Marie Stopes International as a Junior Nurse then got promoted to senior Nurse in a few months because of his performances. The following year, he got promoted to be the Clinical Service coordinator at the Support office. This years(2020) Henry transferred from Port Moresby to Rabaul to run a clinic as the OIC Officer in Charge/ or Nurse unit manager, specialize in Sexual Reproductive health and family planning at Nonga General Hospital under Marie Stopes Clinic. What is your advise to others who who have been in a similar situation as you?
