CHILDREN should receive early childhood education (ECE) from two to six years of age while their minds are still developing so that they learn good character development and personal responsibility, an education official says. Morobe education reform director (early childhood education) Haring Qoreka told teachers and parents attending an ECE presentation day at Lae, Uni Block ECE learning centre that he was impressed with the performance of the school. Qoreka said the provincial government was working with the Government, who have already approved the province to use the education reform concept of 3.6.6 and make early childhood education the foundation of education system in the province.
The concept 3.6.6 – three years in ECE, six years in primary school and then another six years in high school and secondary school – would change the 1.6.6 concept currently used. Qoreka said the provincial elementary schools would be established with early childhood education so that the 3.6.6 concept was implemented. He said students were struggling when they went to primary schools from elementary schools because they had not been taught adequately at the initial level. He said by the time a child was six or seven, he or she needed to be grounded in the basics and also be used to the school structure.
