![]() By David Mead As a kid growing up in Tubusereia, a village in Papua New Guinea, I always had a dream to play professional rugby league. The best part was I felt like I was going to make it and no one could tell me otherwise. I remember my friends and I would gather after school to play. If we didn’t have a ball we would use an empty plastic bottle. There was no organised sport so we had to improvise. We gave ourselves the names of our favourite NRL players and debated who was the biggest, fastest and strongest. It was a lot of fun. What I found growing up in my teenage years and into high school was that the dream started to feel distant. I started to hear people say that it was very hard to make it. You need to make rep teams. Only a small number of people make it. You have to be big. You have to be skillful. The list went on.
A lot of things that were said made me feel more doubtful and hesitant about having that dream. Most of the time these things were not even said directly to me. I heard them through casual conversation amongst family, friends and people at the local footy ground. I also had a lot of support from all these people. The weird thing was that the negative stuff stuck to my mind a lot more than the positive. I was lucky to have found a coach who developed huge belief within me and told me to put in the work. The feeling I had as a kid started to become real again. If you have a dream, put the work in and get yourself around people who know how to help you best.
