Story Credit to Carolyn Jay Yako : Solomon Alpas Motivation Back then during school grads, I used to dream of becoming an engineer but unsure which type of engineer I would be. During my year 11, I read a newspaper article on the educational section about a guy from my district in Koroba - Lake Kopiago, Hela Province who successfully completed his studies in the field of Electrical Engineering at Auckland University of Technology . I was so amazed by his story. In fact, his story becomes my motivation. Today, I am proud to graduate as an Electrical Engineer. But graduating in engineering field isn't that easy. I completed my year 11 successfully and continued year 12 with an aim to taking up electrical engineering at UNITECH. I kept telling myself that I can do it if others can. Despite coming from the rural area, my commitment and focus on study remain unchanged. I used kerosene lamps for study in those secondary years. Sometimes, no study in the night when we ran out of kerosene stock. This doesn't change my focus. When SLF was given to me, with no second thought, I put my choice for electrical engineering, a course where the entry requirement is straight "As." My dad is my hero. He kept encouraging me to believe in myself. "If I can do it, you can do it. Nothing is impossible." My subject teacher doubted me. I can still remember my teacher question my choice. "Carol, are you sure about your first choice at Unitech electrical engineering?" A lot of my class mates were discouraged to apply for engineering courses at Unitech. This still does not change my goal, my mission, my objective, my aim. I kept telling myself, 'I can do this.' I didn't let their opinions ruled over me. In 2016 I was one of the two female students from my school selected to UNITECH. I happened to be the only one selected for engineering stream and was one of the five females amongst 27 males in the field of electrical engineering. Despite many many challenges, I managed to complete my studies within 4 years and here I am with my 'bamboo'. My message: 'Don't let someone's opinion distract you from your goal. Keep believing in yourself and tell yourself you've got this and you can do it. Work towards your dream with total commitment and be willing to sacrifice few things in life.
