![]() Hi! My name is Bernietha Shalom Wagun, and I am a 20 year old law student in my 3rd year of studies here at the University of Papua New Guinea. I decided to study law because of a great family influence. The notion of me studying law had always been something talked of throughout my family and I kind of just went with it. Having an older cousin who is more like a sister to me and who is also a lawyer, I had the perfect example and role model. And now looking back at it I can surely say it was all the result of God’s will. At first, I had some doubts about pursuing this path, however with time and my interest in this area having grown sufficiently, I began to identify within myself a passion for this noble profession. Being the type of person that I am who loves to help people, I had to choose a career path that would allow me to do just that. Help people. And more specifically, my fellow countrymen and women. So I chose law. What interested or rather, intrigued me the most about law is the fact that it is universal. Everywhere you go, there are laws. Such an idea to be interesting would seem silly or boring to most people but to me the idea is entirely pure. The law regulates, it prescribes and it establishes order. It is a standard. Without the law there is no structure.
Think of it like a sealed road. Roads are everywhere but when they are unsealed, they are loose, weak and easily damaged. Similarly, society or the world is a road or series of roads, and without the tar that seals everything in – without the law that controls and maintains order, it is weak and so society falls and becomes unruly. I believe that the law is more or less the big picture and by going down this path I could do my bit to drive change where I am. I know I have quite some way to go but as I continue to study, experience and understand the law and go further on this journey with all the faith, love and support from my family and friends, I have my eyes set on the future to be the best lawyer I can be for my people.
