WIDOW Annette Narewe Gore says she has been teaching in rural Nawaeb, Morobe, without pay for over 10 years now. Gore said the need for building a strong education foundation was far more important. In 2008, she left her teaching position with an international education agency school in Lae to help start an elementary school in Dzendzen village in the Wain-Erap local level government. “I had nothing to lose,” she said. “I was a widow with adult children and the people in the village needed my help.” Gore, from Bulolo, who was married to a man from Northern, went into Dzendzen a complete stranger.
A house was provided, garden food catered for, Gore continued as the teacher in-charge without pay for the last 13 years, living off the assistance of Dzendzen and neighbouring villagers and families. She said teaching elementary one and two English saw demand for Maramai Elementary School increase with 60 to 80 new registrations annually. Gore said when she started, the school structure was built out of bush material with roofing iron and a dirt floor. Earlier this month, the school was presented with a modern two-in-one building structure where students would sit in comfort to learn. Gore was happy, saying good early learning built a strong foundation. She also appealed to provincial education if the teaching positions for her and two colleagues could be funded this year, given the positive recognition shown to her school.
