Elementary will become the priority sector for Education in the 2014 Western Highlands Provincial Calender. This was announced during the end of the year party, hosted by the Provincial Education Department’s Administration branch at the Hotel Kiminga on Saturday night. Provincial Education Advisor Stanley Maip said his administration realised that elementary was the core part of a student’s life who needs a good foundation laid at this level and therefore this sector needs all the support it can get from stakeholders, especially the provincial education administration. He thanked all staff and their family members present at the function, adding that 2013, regardless of a lot of huddle along the way, was a successful one and promised that 2014 would be a good year. Western Highlands reportedly came second in the country in the grade 10 examinations with Paprabug High School scoring top marks. “Our marks in the past were okay but we declined over the last six or seven years. This year we picked up again. We should now focus on the most important areas of learning for our kids,” Mr Maip said. Senior education officials at the function acknowledged Mr Maip for having introduced the new system of teachers leave fare by directly depositing them into their accounts unlike in the past when a travelling agent was engaged to oversee this. They said the new system was more convenient and that all teachers in the province were happy after so many years of complaining. Mr Maip also called on staff to forward any idea that would help further improve education in the province. “Some of you may have an idea that would be of very important to our education system but you’re holding it back. We can all come up with a good system if we all contribute,” Mr Maip said. He called on teachers and administration staff to kick-start the 2014 school year fresh and with their hearts to give the best to the kids. Mr Maip said: “If there is any differences between us, let’s talk it over during the holidays. Let us all teachers, staff, parents, PNGTA and other stakeholders join hands and prepare for a good 2014 after a good holiday.”
