Students at the University of Papua New Guinea went to polls today to elect their Student Representative Council after 4 years of absence. This comes after the suspension of the SRC following the 2016 protest over political issues during the then, O'Neill led government. Polling both at the Forum square opened at 9 am this morning, with students from each faculty presenting their Identity Cards to vote. The Electoral Commission is overseeing the elections. Those elected into office will lead the student body in 2021. UPNG vice-chancellor Professor Frank Griffin said earlier one of his priorities after his appointed in 2019 was to reinstate the SRC which he did this year. There are 7 male contestants for the SRC President seat, 2 male candidates for the male vice president seat, and two female candidates for the female vice president. Polling is expected to end later this afternoon with counting tomorrow.
