A residential hall at the University of Papua New Guinea went up in flames this afternoon. The damage caused by the fire is worth K10, 000. The single building of Veari village residential hall on main campus belongs to a male warden, but is not occupied. Fire trucks from Waigani fire service responded to the situation and tried desperately to contain the flames, but the building burnt down to ashes. Superintendent for Waigani Fire Service Arifeae Faropo said the building was already in flames when they arrived at the scene. No casualties were reported. The building was condemned by NCDC health department in 2017 for hygiene issues. UPNG’s registrar Dr Peter Petsul urged students and nearby residents on campus to be careful with cigarette butts or any form of open fires.
