![]() A SIX-DAY awareness was carried out in Port Moresby communities urging students to take education seriously, says Motu-Koita student association president Siosi Opao. Opao said students attending University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) promoted education to the communities to encourage students to study hard. From Nov 7-18, the awareness was about empowering and promoting education in Motu Koita. The six communities were Kilakila, Pari, Hanuabada, Tatana, Mahuru and Baruni. Opao said the awareness was conducted in the nights to ensure all parents, students and teachers could attend and know the importance of education.
“According to our research, it shows that less than five Motu- Koita students were selected into UPNG every year for their studies.” Opao said that has been a great concern for the Motu-Koita students attending UPNG to address the issues affecting students of getting good grades in their studies. Divine Word University (DWU) students also carried out a similar awareness at the Sirunki Lutheran Secondary School in Enga last month. The awareness was initiated by the DWU student representative council (SRC) president, Jason Ray. “I believe that it will change the perspective of students to study smart and venture into tertiary institutions,” he said. The DWU students empathised on the significance of education, study, shared experiences of a university life and about social issues to help minimise matters like tribal fights.
