![]() Commentary by Adrian Neronggai Enhancing Student Learning and Accountability through Online Assignment Submission and Grading" For the past three years, I have been a student at the University of Papua New Guinea. And I must admit that I am deeply dissatisfied with the current approach of submitting assignments on paper and manually grading them. The current system takes a lot of time. Lecturers must spend a lot of time gathering and grading paper assignments. This not only causes delays in the delivery of feedback and grades, but it also limits the time that lecturers have to offer insightful and thorough feedback. The current system is also prone to mistakes. Manual grading of assignments can result in errors, such as incorrectly interpreting or inputting marks and handling of work, which can have a detrimental effect on grades. Additionally, the current method makes it challenging to identify plagiarism, undermining the academic integrity of the students and the institution. The pupils' best interests are not served by the possibility of unjust grades brought on by a lack of an effective plagiarism detector. The DivineWord University uses something like that. Why can’t UPNG do the same? Paper-based assignment collection, grading, and return are inefficient, especially in big classes or when a lot of assignments are turned in. Additionally, students might only have limited access to their grades, which makes it challenging for them to monitor their progress over the course of the course. Some students even fail to receive their papers back on time. The University of Papua New Guinea's students would benefit greatly from an online system that takes these concerns into account. The new system ideally would:
The University of Papua New Guinea has to seriously consider this. The world is changing and we have to change with it. The advancement of AI tech will be abused by students.
