The University of Goroka launched its Strategic Plan 2013 to 2017, making it the first government Educational Institution to have a master plan.
Top of the agenda is to improve quality teaching with emphasis on training teachers for Technical Vocational Education or TVET as required by the government of the day. This will cater for the increased demand for skills training in the country. It has taken two years to finalise the Corporate and Strategic Plan for the University of Goroka that will ensure top to middles managers align themselves to meet the University’s Five Year Goals. The Corporate and Strategic Plans were launched in true PNG Style with students dressed in traditional attire. There to receive the documents was Director General for the Office of Higher Education, Professor David Kavanamur, who stood in for the Minister responsible, David Arore. Professor Kavanamur said the plans were delayed due to the sidelining of UOG’s Top Management Team for one year, and then the change of government meant new directives for the country’s development and also the call by the UOG Council to restructure the whole university, affecting progress. UOG Vice Chancellor Dr Gairo Onagi said the Corporate Plan highlights seven key areas for UOG that are aligned to the National Government’s Medium Term Development Plan. He said the Corporate and Strategic Plans include an institute of TVET because of the country’s need for skilled manpower in the non- formal sector. Another policy is that on compulsory education, which he says has a lot of resource implications. It meant that all children must go to school and this means more classrooms and more teachers in the next 20 years. Therefore, he appealed to the government to adequately fund government agents that will be required to implement the policy. Comments are closed.
