120 female students, mostly first years have been allocated rooms since 4:30 pm today with more room allocations to be recorded as female students cue up for room allocations at the Unitech students’ services office. Male students were allocated rooms starting also with a total of 363 rooms especially for first and second year students are already being repaired and ready for allocation. Students that have arrived in campus are being asked to bunk up in one of the large dorms until they get registered tomorrow. Deputy Registrar Mr. Henry Gioven said during the registration, the student will be signing two different forms to confirm their return to classes and room allocation. Major works at the temporary messing facility in and around the Student Union Hall has been completed, with installation of a standby generator, cooking gas tank and the kitchen equipment. Operations Manager of IPI Catering, Mr. Denise Sparks said by Wednesday this week, the dining hall will sit a total of 480 students, an addition 80 more chairs compared to the old mess. He revealed that the kitchen is set up with various cooking equipment and will be connected to the main gas tank. Other infrastructures that have been set up include four refrigeration rooms, three storage rooms, a meat preparation room, a vegetable preparations room and a bakery. He said the total cost of setting up the temporary mess will be about K1m when all the job is completed. The renovation of student dorms, mostly males dormitories, started late however, focus is on getting the doors locked and the windows repaired. Project Manager Mr. Ken Polin, said all the boys dorms are being attended to and the contractors are working towards the 24 August deadline when the students will arrive. He said urgent repairs are focused on damages mainly to rooms to get it ready for the students. Other works on electrical and plumbing is done through internal maintenance. “So far progress is fine for a 12 days contract which is very unusual and peculiar. We are prioritising in getting the rooms secured and habitable for the students. Hence were focusing on getting doors locked and windows repaired for each room. Other works like painting and minor renovations can be done after the students settle in,” said Mr Polin. He said the total contract including contingency is K1, 000, 769. 49. Registrar, Mrs Veronica Thomas is releasing a media statement to inform students who wish to withdraw to do so and can apply for admittance next year or in the near future. “The PNG Unitech Council had considered that there is a possibility that some students may not be able to return to resume studies by 29th August 2016 to complete Semester 1. Hence, as the Registrar I am now inviting students for the opportunity to formally apply for withdrawal from studies if they are not able to return and resume studies,” said Mrs Thomas. She said the application form for withdrawal from studies should reach Unitech before or by the 9th September 2016. “Students submitting formal withdrawal form will be regarded as having withdrawn while those failing to formally withdraw will be recorded as having failed, said Mrs Thomas. The Chief Security Officer, Mr. Warren said that the agreement with the police will be signed in the coming days, after several years of efforts to make this arrangement. This will enable the deployment of 5 campus police officers, who will have a license to bear arms. The increasing pressure from thieves and raskals intruding into the campus has made this necessary. He also said that all secruity officers now have been trained by the national security academcy, operated by Guard Dogs. The clinic has been temporarily closed for outsiders. All staff and all students will carry ID cards at all times. New uniforms, radios and torches have been order for all security guards. In addition, the deployment of police force started during the State of Emergency will continue on the campus for at least another 6 to 8 weeks. PNGFM
