![]() The management of the School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS) of UPNG has released a circular yesterday (12th May) stating that all health worker trainees & medical students from the school of medicine & health sciences (SMHS) at Taurama Campus to be vaccinated if they want to do their practical in Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) and to reside at the School campus. The Administration has further stated in the circular that the vaccination is not compulsory, however, the consequences of not being vaccinated means that it will not be possible for the students & health worker trainees to complete their studies. The management has clearly stated that if students are not vaccinated, the administration will remove the students health worker studies at the Medical Faculty. Since the establishment of the UPNG School of Medicine & Health Sciences, an MOA had been signed with the Port Moresby General Hospital that the staff of PMGH will be supervising the students for their practical & provision of optimal care for the patients. Since then, PMGH has been a practical field for the medical students.
Port Moresby General Hospital used to provide the clinical materials, the collaborative efforts of the doctors & the environment of the health system to teach the pharmacy students, medical students, dental students, laboratory science & medical students, medical imaging sciences students & nurses clinical students. The management of the SMHS has decided that all health worker trainees and students must get vaccinated because of the following reasons; * Port Moresby General Hospital has many old age & volunteer staff with low immune system and sick patients in respective words, thus, some of these people are very likely to become seriously ill if a young asymptomatic carrier of the covid19 viruse enters the PMGH's premises & spread the virus from his/her respiratory tract to them. * Also, it is not ethical for health workers to be at risk to their patients & to avoid everyone. However, the medical students have gathered this morning at the Taurama Campus to air their concerns about the circular & the manner in which it has been addressed. Students argued that the circular was insensitive & unprofessional because the rights of the students have been compromised. Students have felt that they have no choice as they have been forced to take the vaccine to reside at the school in Taurama Campus. The UPNG Students Representative Council (SRC), Bradley Yombon Copio, has condemned the circular that was released by the management of the SMHS. "I understand that it is a delicate situation but given an ultimatum saying till Wednesday 18th or vacate the campus is not the way forward, nor telling the students to choose different profession after years of resources & time being invested. "UPNG SRC will be strongly against this as we are the mouth piece of the students & we will protect & voice their views. Students should be given the freedom to choose, if not the management should facilitate other alternatives so that both parties can reach an agreement," Yombon added. Yombon further stated that the covid19 is real, and as for me, upon my own conviction, I got myself vaccinated and you also have that freedom to choose, nobody, neither any authority would take away your democratic rights," Yombon stated. Yombon will meet with UPNG Council to bring forward the concerns of the medical students. #Albertis_Photography #UPNG_Medical_Students Next : University Of PNG Launches Pageant For Young Women, Men Comments are closed.
