A MALE student at a secondary school in Mendi, Southern Highlands, was allegedly hacked to death by a relative last Tuesday, local police say. Police Commander Chief Supt Martin Lakari said the deceased, Patrick Jack, 20, from Pingrip, Karinz local level government (LLG), Mendi-Munihu, was attacked at a market and died at the scene. Jack, who was allegedly killed by his uncle, was a grade 11 student at Mongol Secondary School, Upper Mendi LLG. Chief Supt Lakari said Jack was in a market place at Ipa village in Karinz when the suspect came from behind slashed him on the head killing him. He said the suspect identified as Eso Mondolol, 27, from Samb village, was tracked down by police on the same day and was arrested and charged with wilful murder.
He said the reason for the killing was payback as the deceased had previously assaulted the suspect and had not compensated him. Chief Supt Lakari said the attack was unprovoked and Jack had been caught off guard by Mondolol. He condemned the incident saying people were killing each other over minor issues and this was causing fear and tension in communities. He said Mondolol’s actions were unwarranted and cowardly and the matter should have been resolved peacefully with the help of village leaders. “What kind of a society are we living when people seem to have no respect for others?” he said. Chief Supt Lakari said Mondolol was in police custody and had been refused bail. He appealed to the deceased’s relatives not to retaliate and to allow the police and courts to deal with the alleged killer. He said law and order issues were caused because of a lack of respect and because of poor attitudes.
