![]() ALL hell broke loose when fighting broke out in Mt Hagen between Mt Hagen Park and Mt Hagen Secondary schoolboys from Friday to Saturday. At least two schoolboys were killed and more than 20 others injured as reported from Mt Hagen Hospital. Businesses were brought to a standstill as the fighting raged on for two days resulting in reports of deaths, injuries, looting and destruction of properties. The fighting is believed to be a continuation of a fight between the schoolboys on March 25.
According to police, shops and businesses were destroyed as opportunists took to the streets, looting business premises of goods, cash and properties. Western Highlands commander Chief Superintendent Joe Puri confirmed the fighting, destruction and looting of properties. “The exact number of deaths is yet to be confirmed and the cause of the fighting has yet to be determined,” he said. “I went to Mt Hagen Secondary at about 8am on Friday and addressed students over the March 25 fight,” he said. “But in the afternoon, the same students started fighting again at the main market along the Highlands Highway leading towards Jiwaka and Lae.” Puri said while fighting was raging on, the public joined in, which worsened the situation. He said according to reports, some shops were looted with cash and other properties taken. “The reason for this fight is yet to be established,” he said. “We will need to complete full investigations to determine what happened. The entire situation was brought under control by police to restore normalcy and order in the city.” Puri said he had also requested for the return of the police mobile squad from Mt Hagen from Tari who had returned in the weekend to boost security. He said business was as usual over the weekend but the situation was still tense and people must take precautions as policemen would not be able to be present everywhere. The looters broke into Digicel PNG and other businesses in Hagen Plaza. The National / PNG Education News Next : Secondary Schools In Lae To Get New Coaster Buses Comments are closed.
