WHEN government coffers run dry and cannot assist schools in transporting examination papers, Tusbab Provincial Secondary proved schools can assist other schools. Simbai High School principal Nathan Wiripi yesterday said that he had a tough time last week to transport examination papers for 115 Grade 10 students in his school and Tusbab Provincial Secondary assisted with K18,000 to charter a helicopter to deliver them. “There was no flight schedule for Madang and Simbai and we were planning to go Western Highlands way and walk to Simbai but it was not safe while carrying those important papers,” Wiripi said. Simbai is only accessible by small aircrafts which had their own schedules and at most times do not travel in bad weather.
“Mr Igag, from Tusbab, heard about our struggle and called me in and signed a K18,000 cheque to Heli Niugini and he dropped off the exam papers for Aiome and Simbai,” he said. Wiripi had a tough experience in August when he carried written expression examination papers and walked through thick forest for two days and a night to make sure his Grade 10 students sat their exams the next day. “I was so worried at that time and did not stop walking until I reached the school at 10pm,” Wiripi said. “That experience has drawn the attention of senior schools and different education sectors so Tusbab Secondary came into assist us for which I am very thankful.” Madang provincial education director Moses Sariki applauded Tusbab for assisting Simbai High School and commended Wiripi for committing his time and energy for his students. Meanwhile Sariki said Grade 8 examinations in two weeks time would need about K200,000 so exam papers could be delivered to remote schools and allowances and accommodation for supervisors met.
