GRADUATE Clementine Nauwet received the school of humanities and social sciences’ (SHSS) executive dean’s award for achieving the highest accumulative grade point average (GPA) of 4.38 at the University of Papua New Guinea’s (UPNG) 67th graduation yesterday. “This woman has made history to be the recipient of the newly introduced award,” SHSS executive dean Prof Leo Marai said of the 22-year-old. “The award is the first of its kind to be given and Clementine is the first recipient of that award.” The East Sepik woman’s accumulative GPA of 4.38 was the highest GPA in the strand of political science and SHSS in 2021.
Clementine, at the graduation at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex, said that she was proud to have earned the award but added that there were many other bright students in her school. She was pleased to be the first female recipient of the top award from the male-dominated political science strand. Clementine said it was challenging to be a political science student in the country’s premier university as there were academic requirements and expectations that had to be met. “University is challenging as I have to submit assignments on time and ensure that they meet the criteria,” she said. Clementine said studying at UPNG gave her the best practical lesson on time management and personal commitment. “I was taught to be punctual, to attend programmes, events and classes on time and even submit assignments before the due dates and it all demands personal commitment.” Clementine said it required vision and action to progress in a professional academic environment and life generally. She urged women and girls to prioritise their education and help contribute meaningfully to the development of the country. “My message to womenfolk is to dream, be disciplined and simply put in the time and effort to complement the dream,” she said. Clementine said women could achieve higher levels in education but only if they put in the time, effort and commitment to their studies. Comments are closed.
