MORE than 170 grade 8 students in Madang did not sit their examinations two weeks ago because students were scared after two murders. Josephstaal Primary School in Middle Ramu reported 24 grade 8 students and Bau Primary School reported 150 students missed the examinations. Josephstaal Primary School headmaster Linus Geven said two murders occurred in the school area which scared and disturbed the children just before the exams. Geven said a teacher allegedly murdered her husband in their garden near the school. He said the teacher’s husband had sexually abused her and out of frustration kicked her husband in the chest and quickly grabbed her husband’s bush knife and slashed his throat.
He said the teacher was in custody. Geven said classes were disrupted when the murder occurred and students stayed home. He said the following week a grade 5 student was murdered by a man who alleged that the student had an affair with his wife a few years back. Geven said students stopped going to school when both murders happened. “The grade 8 students’ internal marks were affected because they didn’t sit for the exams leading up to the final exams,” he said. “Classes were stopped a week before the grade eight national exams.” He said he had written to the provincial education board to have the current students repeat their grade next year so they could sit their exams. Bau Primary School’s 170 grade 8s missed out when the school closed in April following the beheading of a teacher. Umun community leader and Bau Vocational School chairman Imakul Bann said surrounding communities had started making peace and reconciliations to allow government services to resume in the area. Our grade 8s who were supposed to sit their exams now missed out because the school was closed after the murder took place,” Bann said. “We want the school to open next year.” Madang education director Moses Sariki said Bau Primary board should write to the provincial education board to raise such concerns like what Josephstaal Primary School did. Sariki said safety of the teachers should be guaranteed before they begin a fresh school year. The National Comments are closed.
