![]() By Albertis Photography During the UPNG Ialibu-Pangia Students Orientation at Tuna Bay in Port Moresby, Tonny Kondo (an elite of Ialibu-Pangia) was invited as a guest speaker with other elites of the district. While taking the stage, Mr Kondo committed K5,000 cash to the UPNG Ialibu-Pangia Students Association. Kondo went on to encourage the students with his life experiences as a village boy going to school and the challenges he faced while pursuing his studies at UPNG. My name is Tonny Kondo from central Ialibu in SHP. I grew up in a very remote village and as a village kid I didn't know anything about the function of the modern world in terms of education. My village was quite far from school so for 12 years of being in school (Primary up to Secondary) I had to walk one hour, thirty minutes to reach the school, every morning, every afternoon, life was really tough for me in terms of the distance. At that time, I didn't know the core importance of education, meaning to say that, after completing my education, I would become this and that. I had only a little knowledge about it . However, when I was in Secondary school, what inspired me to study hard was that I really wanted to see Port Moresby, so I studied like nobody's business because my main aim is to see Port Moresby.
I used to see people flying to Port Moresby and coming back and I really wished to do the same and that wish really drived me to study hard. During my time, thank God that we didn't have access to Facebook or mobile phone for that matter, so much of my time was consumed by my school activities and I also had a luxury of time to read and further committed to my study. When I did my Gr12, I said to myself that this is the last thing I must do to fully commit my time to study and pass the G12 exam, which I did, and when my name came to pursue my study at UPNG, I was so amazed because my wish and dream to see Port Moresby came true. When I came to UPNG, I only brought my school fee because my dad earned around K500 a month or something and that's how hard my parents save up to pay for my school fee for the first year. I was totally a village boy, and when I came to UPNG, I dressed and came like a village boy, nothing expensive attached with me. I didn't have phone and laptop, I only brought with me my school fees. During the first semester, I told myself, that I have to kill myself with study to maintain my HECAS, no time to waste. I can't easily forget that I used to wear same trousers every week but the most important thing I did was, I got my time managed, and my studies right. While studying, I used to see students driving in and out of the Campus and as a kid coming from a village, seeing all that was an inspiration and also a challenge to me. Seeing my colleague students coming from a very good family background, I often go down very low because I used to think that I am not match with them. Comparing my struggling parents back at the village with a very low income with theirs, I used to feel for my parents and that pushed me to study even harder and score good grades. There was a time, I thought, that I need to have a car too but who will buy it and give it to me. I had listed hundred of things I could do to own a car while at school. I listed them and I worked towards each of them one by one. By the end of second year before I went home for Christmas holiday, I purchased a car. It was the result of pure hard work, (salim moni, salim kola) whatever that I did to purchase that car was the result of a pure hard work and sacrifices. While still being a student, whatever I did to make income, I did it with compassion. I did not care when my colleague students laughed at me, I was really focused on my business. I was chasing after my dream and when I completed my final year, I graduated with a Bachelor in Human Resource with other 39 students. However, the 39 of my colleagues got a job while I was still looking for a job employment for two years. It was a depression thing to me, however, I finally got a job but they told me that you would be working with G12 school leavers, and I thought, I am a degree guy so how could I go down and work with Gr12 leavers. I had this kind of question in my mind but I had no choice so I decided to go and work with them. I worked as a casual in one of the government department. So normally, we used to go and stand on the line, and they used to pay us and every year we have to renew the job. People back at home heard that I got a job so their expectations were very high. They had no idea how much I earned from the job. Actually I earned K550, so with that money, will I pay for my rent, food and other basic needs or send it to my parents, and relatives back at home and what do you do with K550 for a fortnight, so much pressure was added on me every single day so one time I set down and devise a plan. After five years of saving in the casual position, without any permanent number or whatsoever, I still love and committed to my job. Despite the challenges, I started to manage the money wisely. I have also decided on how I could generate income for myself instead of waiting for the fortnight. Since then, I have started my small things and here I am. To conclude, my advice and word of encouragement to the up coming elites of Ialibu-Pangia, please don't waste your precious time. Don't waste your time on Facebook, time is the most precious component that any human being can have. People who manage time know how to manage life. The real challenge is out there in the real world. When you completed your studies and pass out, learn to engage in a little job or whatever job that comes along your way. And how much that you will be earning, learn to manage it wisely. For after a great struggle, lies a greater blessings. One of the things that I did while studying, I red books like no body's business. I concluded one story which helped me to become a successful man. I red the Book Titled; People Manipulation. It is about identifying the things that manipulate people from focusing on their Goals in Life, only then you will become successful. In today's world, it is all about how you connect to people. It's all about understanding people. Anyone and everyone that comes across in life is not by coincidence. It always happens for a reason. Be kind to people and build connections, it is through people, you would get possible opportunities. #Albertis_Photography #Like_Share_Comment_and_be_Inspired #Life_Experiences_of_Tonny_Kondo Next : Czuba Fights Suspension Comments are closed.
