The Papua New Guinea government has announced that on the 27th of April only the tertiary institutions will resume classes. Prime Minister James Marape in the daily COVID-19 Update yesterday, says primary and Secondary schools will resume a week later on Monday 4th of May. The NOC-19 Team and the Education Department are finalizing details of new protocols and guidelines the schools will operate according to when classes resume, to protect students from COVID-19. Among the new measures include social distancing and avoiding the overcrowding in classrooms. Prime Minister Marape says the government wants to bring back normalcy to the country at the earliest and for people to live normally within COVID-19 protocols, and education is a top priority. Marape says his government could have taken the easy way out and shut down schools for the rest of this year and start fresh next year. But he says it’s the morale right of the children to education and his government wants to ensure its not sabotaged. The PM says they will use the month of May to trial out the new education protocols in schools and if they see that the new guidelines are working they will let schools continue through to the end of the year. However, he says if after May and they see a threat to the lives of students then they will have to close down schools.
