TERTIARY institutions should improve job search skills for students and graduates, says Pacifund’s chief executive officer Des Yaninen. Yaninen was concerned about the quality of written English that graduates from higher institutions displayed in their job applications. He said while a good number of graduates who came out of higher institutions were brilliant, many did not know how to properly approach or talk to potential employers. He said universities and higher institutions should be more concerned with the quality of their graduates rather than the quantity. “I appeal to the academic faculty or student services there to get your graduates to learn how to apply for jobs properly,” he said.
Yaninen also appealed to the students and graduates who were seeking employment to follow the right processes. “Don’t send unsolicited WhatsApp or Facebook messages asking for jobs from people who don’t know who you are,” he said. “If you must, identify yourself. “Annoying a potential employer by spamming them with messages will not get you hired.” Yaninen encouraged them to also proof-read anything they were going to send to employers. He said they should not be discouraged if they did not get the jobs they applied for. “There are limited jobs so don’t be discouraged if you are unsuccessful,” he added. Keep trying and eventually you will find one.” Yaninen said that tertiary institutions should do everything to get their graduates ready for jobs.
