TEACHING Service Commission (TSC) chairman Baran Sori, pictured, says some teachers were paid less than their normal salaries recently due to adjustments being made to pay rates for 2017-18 He said there would be fluctuations but TSC was sorting out the issue. TSC and the PNG Teachers Association are to meet to discuss the matter and Sori urged the 56,000 teachers to be patient and allow TSC to sort out the matter. The pay cuts confused teachers as there was no explanation given to them.
Teachers experienced less take-home pay for three fortnights – pay 18, 19 and 20. In Morobe some cuts were made to pay 15, teachers there said. Teachers in the Highlands region had raised similar concern at the Highlands association office in Mt Hagen. PNGTA Highlands regional secretary John Melson had received complaints from teachers in the area. Melson told teachers that his office would liaise with people in authority to find out the exact cause of the pay cut. He confirmed that he had received complaints from teachers in the Highlands when they faced deductions for three fortnights. This was also raised by the PNGTA Western Highlands branch president Don Remi. Teachers in Morobe had seen cuts as much as K300 a fortnight while some ranged from K80 to K200.
