![]() With the resumption of the 2020 academic schooling year, Primary and Secondary School teachers are advised to resume a week ahead to prepare lessons for their students. Minister for Education Joseph Yopyyopy said teachers will start on the 27th of this month while students are to resume on the 4th May as previously announced. ‘’We have lost five weeks of effective learning and teaching due to the current SOE to contain the spread of Covid-19,” he said. All lost hours must be recovered by the end of term three so that students have learnt all required unist of work and are ready for National Examinations. Minister Yopyyopy said one period lesson will be added to the normal classes on Monday’s, Wednesday’s & Friday’s and 2periods added to Tuesday’s and Thursday’s each week to make up for the other lost 4weeks. He added, ‘’The lower secondary Grade 10 Written Expression examination that was set for Thursday 4th June 2020 has now been deferred to 18th June 2020. Apart from this, all other national exam dates will not change.’’ He also called on the SOE Controller to lift the ban on all public transport before students resume school. “There will be a public notice coming from the SOE Controller to allow all the buses to run again,” he said. In line with the basic hygiene practices on the issue of overcrowding in classrooms, the Minister said his office is working on the matter as this was unexpected. ‘’One of the possibilities they are looking at is ‘’Safe Teaching’’, that’s to have 2 classes a day, one in the morning from 8am to 1pm and the second class form 2pm to the end of the day.’’ Minister Yopyyopy said they have already released first part of the funds early this month (the first Government Tuition Fee Subsidy ‘’GTFS’’ Policy) worth of K50million into schools accounts and there will be more coming. ‘’There will be more funding coming and we have given directions on schools to install hand basins and other basic hygiene process in the school.’’ The Department will conduct awareness on Covid-19 in schools published by WHO, UNICEF and IFRC and implemented throughout the education system using existing funding mechanisms and policies, such as the Health Education programs, Schools Learning Improvement Plans and WaSh.
