Twenty-eight secondary school teachers from Central and National Capital District received certificates in information technology skills after three days of training with Datec Learning Centre in Port Moresby. General-manager of Datec Learning Centre Ravi Chandran said this was an IT skills workshop for teachers. He said the idea was to enhance teaching skills of secondary and high school teachers which they could impart to their students.
“Training involved basic computing and networking skills, programming and web designing for the first level,” Chandran said. “The programme has four levels of training. “Our preparation takes two years of establishing contact with each school principal of our pilot project ‘ICT Up-Skill Workshop’ to empower teachers in the field of information technology.” He said the main objective of this workshop was to empower teachers to deliver IT curriculum in line with Vision 2050. National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop said such training paved the way for the future. He said cutting-edge technology buildings like Butuka Shenzhen institute in Moresby-South had inbuilt computerised systems which would need trained people to operate. Department of Education representative Benny Rayappan said there were only 10,000 spaces at tertiary institutions for Grade 12 school leavers out of 25,000 every year.
