![]() THE Papua New Guinea Teachers Association (PNGTA) has called for a six per cent pay rise before the end of the school year. PNGTA president Aita Sanangkepe said this was because teachers had missed out on the state’s three per cent pay rise for all public servants. Sanangkepe said teachers were important workers in any country and needed to be given that respect and consideration. “If you want quality human resources you make teachers happy and they will produce that quality,” he said. Sanangkepe clarified that the three per cent incremental rise was what all public servants received annually but since teachers had not received theirs so far they deserved a little more.
PNGTA vice-president Synell Ko’ou said they would discuss an additional log of claims with the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) soon. TSC chairman Samson Wangihomie said with the absence of a log of claims teachers would not receive the three per cent rise and the PNGTA needed to act quickly. He said the issue needed to be addressed promptly by the Government or teachers would have to wait another two to three years to get a pay increase.
