ABOUT 200 primary school teachers in Chimbu have been urged to upgrade their qualification. Senior inspector for primary and elementary, Agnes Gegua said this during the closing of a one week in-service conducted by PNG Education Institute under its Department of Education primary in-service (Depi) programme last Thursday at Kundiawa training centre. Gegua told the 53 primary and seven elementary teachers that in order to impart quality education in the classrooms, they must move with the changing world. “We, teachers are agents of change, to make a difference in our fields, we must equip ourselves with new knowledge and skills,” she said.
Gegua told the participants that what they did was a step in the right direction to improve their qualification and at the same time provide quality education to the young generation. She said the Depi programme helped teachers with teaching certificates to upgrade their qualifications to diploma in primary education. “I want to call on 200 plus primary school teachers still teaching with teaching certificates in the province to enroll in the Depi programme and upgrade your qualification,” she said. Depi coordinator Benard Daiwa said since the programme was introduced in 2006, over 200 primary school teachers upgraded their qualifications from certificates to diploma. “It comes in phase by phase and those who completed their course and scored more than 50 credited points are certified with diploma in primary education,” he said. Daiwa said this programme was good because teachers could still teach while upgrading their qualification.
