Almost 10 teachers at the Ward Strip primary school in Port Moresby are living in classrooms due to accommodation issues and more workload as a result of the increase number of students. Head Mistress Mrs Emily Ricky said the school has no choice but to allow teachers to stay in classrooms as long as they turn up for classes every day. “Most of these teachers are female teachers who are either divorced or unable to afford accommodation in the city,” said Mrs Ricky Meanwhile a female teacher at the school, Mrs Dulcie Minimbi who also resides at the school pointed out that workload is another factor that causes teachers to spend the night at school. “We have more than 60-70 students in a class and it is impossible for us to take their books home for marking or prepare other learning materials at home, and because of such work load, people like myself are forced to live in the school so I can work in the night also” said Mrs Minimbi. She said apart from the workload, they cannot afford accommodation with what they are earning from their salaries. “Our pay should be increased; especially our housing allowance which use to be K7 and was recently increased to K19 or so, but still you can’t rent a place with K19” Mrs Minimbi said the Education Department should look at increasing housing allowance, especially for teachers teaching in urban centers.
