![]() THERE is nothing stopping teachers from receiving the Covid-19 vaccine when it becomes available to them, says Education Minister Jimmy Uguro. “If teachers are to be vaccinated, it can be arranged with health authorities as long as there is enough vaccine for all,” Uguro said. Ted Diro Primary School head teacher Hane Charlie had said teachers were frontline workers and should be vaccinated first with health workers. Charlie said teachers interacted daily with students who came from different homes. Charlie said teachers were vulnerable to the Covid-19 and many had been diagnosed with asthma or shortness of breath because of the chalk dust.
She supported the call by the PNG Teachers Association for the Government to look after the welfare of the teachers too. Principal of the Jubilee Catholic Secondary School in Port Moresby Barbara Miles said the Covid-19 vaccination should be voluntary for teachers. “It should be a personal choice. “There are so many different stories about the vaccine so people read and they interpret things differently. “They should leave it optional for everyone,” Miles said. Meanwhile, Uguro said schools should organise shift classes if they were facing overcrowding in classrooms. He said the student-teacher ratio in primary school was 30 to 1 and in high schools between 40 and 45 to one teacher. “You can encourage shift classes – some attend classes in the morning and some in the afternoon,” he said. He said schools in towns and cities can be treated separately. Charlie told The National that practising social distancing in schools, especially in Port Moresby was difficult as most schools were overcrowded.
