A WASU Secondary School senior teacher who was slashed by his students is being investigated for alleged sexual abuse of schoolgirls, Morobe commander Superintendent Jacob Singura says. “We will investigate both cases thoroughly – the attack and slashing of the senior teacher and the alleged sexual abuses,” he said. Singura said four policemen were sent to the school in Tewai-Siassi last week and they returned on Monday with two suspects who attacked and injured the senior teacher. He said the senior teacher was alleged to have molested his schoolgirls or committed rape over time.
Singura said the attack occurred between 2am and 3am on Thursday when schoolboys caught the senior teacher trying to rape a schoolgirl in their basketball court. “The teacher punched one of them and the other schoolboy ran back to the dormitory and sought support from others,” he said. “They returned to the basketball court and allegedly attacked the teacher by slashing him on the right and left side of his shoulders.” Singura said that as the policemen from the rural command left the school for Lae on Monday with the suspects, the other students went on strike and did not attend classes till today (yesterday). “They might resume classes tomorrow (today) or end of the week,” he said. The students protested and wanted the police to also arrest the teacher. “Police will, after further investigations, take in the teacher for questioning,” Singura said.
